Danish Maistic Bio Group expands corporation with bioplastic Chinese developer Torise Biomaterials
A strong focus on well-priced consumer products, a clear non-plastic company strategy and communication and a corporation with well known organizations with concerns on environmental issues has in just a few years made Maistic® a talk of the town brand.
Last spring the first Maistic® OK Compost Home certified shopping bags were introduced in the first 10 supermarkets in Denmark and Greenland. Two more handfuls receive bags in the next few weeks. All of the supermarkets are members of the two large Nordic supermarket groups, Coop and Dagrofa. Compostable bags weren’t in Danish supermarkets before. But endusers demanded them and love the stores for having introduced them.
Brand strategy towards endusers is a rarity in the bioplastics world. But endusers have shown to be ready and eager to make the change. Endusers gives valuable insight and are important influencers, founder and CEO of Helsingør, Denmark based Maistic Bio Group, Brian Bouet Smith, explains:
“We had an online survey made, showing approx. 80% prefer compostable bags, even at a higher price. Not only shopping bags, but for food packaging even more. Also, if you take a look through Maistic tagged Facebook news from shops and supermarkets introducing a new product from us, these news are very often liked and shared much more than everything else on the shop profile. But industry, retail brands and supermarket groups are still reluctant to take a stand on plastic and alternatives, missing out on the CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) value awaiting”.
To follow up on growing demands, Maistic Bio Group now officially joins forces with bioplastic developer Torise Biomaterials (Jiangsu, China) in the Northern Europe area. Aim is to meet both growing interest on compostable bag and nonvowen products, but also to find partners for resins and bag production nearby.
Maistic Bio Group has specialized in certified compostables. Not only compostable bioplastics, but also other EN 13432 certified compostable materials (Vincotte or Seedling). Last year, Maistic Bio Group succeeded in introducing four compostable or microplastic free product lines for fixed assortment in large supermarket chains, including home compostable waste, food and freezer safe bags and a line of disposable dishware.
As a second company ‘pillar’ is non-plastic and fully biobased alternatives to typical plastic products with high risk of polluting microplastic, so far plastic free cleaning cloths and a line of fully biobased cleaning sponges.
Maistic is well represented in all three Danish speaking countries. Sales in Norway is fast growing through both large distributor Norganic and towards large clients through Maistic sales representative. Sweden and Germany are next.
Behind Maistic Bio Group non-plastic and compostable strategy is a wide network of close partners, developers and factories. One of these, the PLA and compostable resin developer and factory, Torise Biomaterials, is now joining up with Maistic Bio Group in Northern Europe, making Maistic the sales office of both products and resin in the area.
“We believe that under the new close cooperation between Torise and Maistic, the development process on compostable packaging materials and solutions will grow faster in the future,” says Laurance Ruan, founder and CEO of Torise Biomaterials.
As a leading manufacturer in the Chinese biodegradable compostable industry, Torise Biomaterials not only produces finished biodegradable products, but also produces raw materials. Being able to handle the costs very well, competitive prices make Torise Biomaterials develop rapidly. In the meantime, Maistic Bio Group handles sales as Torise continues to enhance quality and development of new materials in its own Research Institute.
As BSCI and ISO certified, Torise is committed to continued innovation. The company is ready for the 2018 demand under the EN 16640 standard for at least 40% biobased carbon biodegradable polymer. Torise is also developing new application fields for biodegradable fibers, injection moulded products etc.
The new close Maistic-Torise corporation is the first in the Maistic strategy to expand further on compostable and plastic free packaging materials and solutions.
